Thornberry Unit
The John Thornberry Unit, located at East 43rd Street & Cleveland, has been a vital part of the community since 1968. In 1999, the Unit was renovated and expanded through a $12 million campaign with Genesis School to create the Thornberry Center for Youth & Families, serving as a safe and enriching space for youth.

Sherman Thomas
Thornberry Unit Director
Sherman Thomas is an alumnus of the Thornberry Unit and is honored to rejoin as a staff member to serve the community. Growing up, Sherman participated in the RBI program and went on to play four years of NCAA Division 1 Baseball at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He later played independent baseball with the Lee’s Summit Monarchs before transitioning to coaching at the Urban Youth Academy.
While in Arkansas, Sherman earned his Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Services with a minor in Recreation, followed by a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Webster University.
Sherman comes from a Christian family of educators and sports lovers. He loves to travel and explore new places. Sherman is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and enjoys helping others reach their highest potential, regardless of their background.
