Thomas J. Turner
Thomas J. Turner, III grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. He is a 1967 graduate of the University of Missouri. Turner served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971 before beginning a forty-five-year hands-on career in commercial mortgages.
Tom Turner worked with virtually every major or significant developer in the Kansas City area during his career. He was involved in financing developments ranging from a few hundred thousand dollars to hundreds of millions of dollars and with government agencies, Wall Street, and a high percentage of the insurance companies involved in real estate finance. Developments in which Tom Turner was involved include St. Luke’s Medical Plaza Office Complex; the Country Club Plaza; American Century Headquarters; the Black & Veatch building; Leawood’s Town Center Plaza; Lenexa Industrial Park; Hunt Midwest Underground; buildings that currently comprise Cerner’s Headquarters (before Cerner) in North Kansas City; many of the buildings in Executive Park near Front Street and I-435; a large number of the office buildings on College Boulevard; a number of hotels in the Greater Metropolitan Area; Pine Ridge Industrial Park in Johnson County; and hundreds of others.
Tom Turner worked and volunteered in the nonprofit sector for many years. He was a member of Urban Land Institute, member of Mortgage Bankers Association of America, former Chairman, University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC) Trustees, former chairman, Tri-Chair, Missouri 100, and member of Museum of Prairiefire Foundation board of directors to name a few.
Tom has been involved in a leadership capacity with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City for over two decades. His advocacy, leadership and generous support were instrumental to solidifying and growing the Clubs’ RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) program. Tom invested significantly in numerous RBI projects, including the restoration of Cleveland Park and the renovation of Clark-Ketterman baseball fields. After serving for nearly a decade on the Clubs’ RBI Advisory Board, Tom joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City’s Corporate Board of Directors.
Tom helped drive the Clubs’ Base Ball and SportsFest events as well as Kids Night Out. Along with his wife, Jill, Tom has served in leadership capacities on multiple capital campaigns for the Clubs, including most recently the Legacy Campaign. In 2013, Tom and his wife Jill were awarded the John J. “Buck” O’Neil Diamond MVP Award for their commitment to Club youth through sports programming.
Tom is a lifelong supporter and promoter of baseball as well as an ardent advocate for young people. His dedication and support of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City has been and continues to be transformational.
