Team GKC Weightlifters Win Big at Junior Olympics!
The Team GKC Weightlifters competed at the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Des Moines, Iowa from July 31-August 2 and came away with an impressive haul: 11 individual medals, a girls' team championship and a Coach of the Year honor!
Team GKC is a USA Weightlifting registered club consisting of youth from the Thornberry and Wyandotte County Units and headed up by Coach Anna Martin (Thornberry's Program Director) and Assistant Coach Danny Capps (Wyandotte County's Program Director and Club Sports Director).
The competition was spread out over three days, and Team GKC's daily results are below, including their best Snatch and Clean & Jerk:
Boys 11 & Under - 35 kg Weight Class
1st Place: Marquan Goldsby - SNATCH 17 kg (37.4 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 24 kg (52.8 lbs)
2nd Place: Jey Lewis - SNATCH 17 kg (37.4 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 22 kg (48.4 lbs)
3rd Place: Emmanuel Whytus - SNATCH 17 kg (37.4 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 19 kg (41.8 lbs)
Girls 11 & Under - 44 kg Weight Class
1st Place: Lasheyia Boyd - SNATCH 19 kg (41.8 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 32 kg (70.4 lbs)
2nd Place: Denajia Dozier - SNATCH 20 kg (44 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 25 kg (55 lbs)
3rd Place: Vantrice Purnell - SNATCH 18 kg (39.6 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 26 kg (57.2 lbs)
Girls 11 & Under - 53 kg Weight Class
2nd Place: Meleisha Williams - SNATCH 23 kg (50.6 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 30 kg (66 lbs)
Girls 12-13 - 48 kg Weight Class
2nd Place: Raven House - SNATCH 23 kg (50.6 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 35 kg (77 lbs)
Girls 14-15 - 48 kg Weight Class
1st Place: Kiara Cooper - SNATCH 22 kg (48.4 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 32 kg (70.4 lbs)
Girls 14-15 - 58 kg Weight Class
1st Place: Lashai Poole - SNATCH 37 kg (81.4 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 49 kg (107.8 lbs)
Boys 14-15 - 56 kg Weight Class
1st Place: Freddie Brim - SNATCH 40 kg (88 lbs), CLEAN & JERK 57 kg (125.4 lbs)
In addition to these incredible individual accomplishments, Team GKC also won the honor of Girls' Team Champions and Coach Anna Martin was voted AAU Weightlifting Coach of the Year! Many congratulations to this group for such a fabulous showing!
